Toy Review: Blokees Transformers One Classic Class Megatronus
I got the Blokees Transformers One Classic Class Megatronus and full disclosure, I won it in a giveaway over at r/Blokees and r/ActionFigureGeek. I got an email that heavily implied that I had won and asked for my information, which I gave, despite not seeing any announcement on who the winners were. I thought I had won and they simply weren't bothering to announce the winners or something.
A few days later, the winners were finally announced and much to my disappointment, my name wasn't there. So I was kinda irked and a tad worried, thinking that I was tricked into giving out my information. But I kept quiet about it as I had already bragged to a friend that I had won and was feeling rather embarrassed. Fast forward to earlier today, where I received a delivery which I thought was something else.
I opened said delivery and lo and behold, t'was Megatronus.
Did I win or did someone at Blokees jumped the gun in messaging me and they decided to honor the "win"? Eh, who knows. But toys, well, they ain't just plastic. They're stories. And that's the story of this particular Blokees kit. Let's get on with the actual review shall we?
Is this kit worth it? From a price perspective, I would say, yes.
I checked the prices online and it seems that the Classic Class figures cost about 15 USD, although some stores are selling this particular guy for as high as 25 USD, probably because he's new and trending or whatever. But hunt around, you should be able to get him for 15, which is nearly double the price of the regular Blokees Transformers blind boxes. But with this guy, you know which figure you're getting and a whole lot of other stuff which I'll get into.
The thing with model kits like this is that the build experience is part of the value. Megatronus here is not like the blind boxes where the build is pretty simplistic. He's a proper model kit. Maybe somewhere between a Gunpla Entry Grade and High Grade in complexity. So pretty easy and not too time consuming. Though it took me a few hours because I'm slow and I was working at low light conditions, which made figure out the parts orientation really tough.
Megatronus' building process here isn't as silky smooth as Blokee's Legend Ultraman Noa, but it's fairly straightforward and there are a few satisfying snaps of parts clipping into place.
The end result is a beautiful Megatronus figure that's fairly accurate, but he's a bit of a short king and the aura he gives off is Vehicon-vibes. Like, in the movie, when we see Megatronus in the cave, he's this giant of a Transformer, but here he's shorter than Yolopark Cogless Megatron. Which isn't a fair comparison I admit, but he's not that much bigger than the regular Blokees Transformers either. His lithe proportions just makes him feel like a regular ol' Vehicon.
Since I'm already delving into the bad, I might as well talk about the big one. This guy has a LED light-up feature But unlike say, the Blokees Ultraman Noa, whose LED light is activated via a magnet, Megatronus' LED light is activated by... I dunno, the auspices of fate? It just activates at random when you touch the bits surrounding the electronics. But there's no apparent methodology. Like, I could thwack it here and there and it won't activate, but then I could gently set it down and it'd light-up. Luckily, the light cuts off after some time, because I can't figure out how to turn it off myself. Also, the lights are blue, which... doesn't really fit Megatronus now, does it? I mean, granted, blue is the default "good guy" eye color in Transformers One, but you'd think red or purple would be more fitting?
Articulation is interesting, but are somewhat limited by the way it's assembled. The scrawnily attached elbows don't have a great bend because of the forearm plates, despite a fantastic pull out gimmick to have more clearance. And the hips have an interesting swing system, similar to the old Busou Shinki line.
For accessories, Megatronus comes with a base which has an interesting way of attaching to his feet, a couple flame effects, an extra pair of hands and his trident.
Despite the apparent bad mouthing I'm giving the figure, it's actually quite good, and not because I got it for free.
Megatronus is a genuinely good figure, just not great. His build process is good and straightforward, but the gimmicks won't blow your mind. He looks fantastic but you're going to want to put him with smaller figures like Cyberverse Commanders if you want to maximize his aura, otherwise he looks like Prime Soundwave At Home. Articulation is pretty good but other than the shoulder pads, is nothing too impressive. Good spread of extras though.
About the only really "bad" thing about him is the inconsistent light activation.
Overall, he's pretty good but not great. The only great thing about him is his price, because a LOT of value is packed into the 15 dollar price tag.
8.3 out of 10.
Congratulations on the win. Hopefully ActionFigureGeek and Blokees can offer more giveaways via our reddit subs soon.
